'Calendar Girls' coming to Leavitt Theatre

Nov. 9—WILLIMANTIC — Starting Nov. 11, the Windham Theatre Guild is presenting " Calendar Girls" at the Burton Leavitt Theatre.

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11-12 and 17-19 at the theater, which is at 779 Main St. It will begin at 2 p.m. on Nov. 13 and 14.

The show is based on a true story about a woman named Annie, whose husband, John, dies of leukemia. As a memorial for John, she and her best friend, Chris, decided to raise money for a new couch for the hospital's family room.

They persuade members of the Womens' Institute members to pose nude with them for a calendar. After the news of the charitable venture spreads around town, several members of the press visit the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales.

Although the venture is successful, Chris and Annie's friendship is put to the test. A movie based on the story was released by Miramax in 2003.
