Calgary Crowds Rally in Support of Anti-Mandate Trucker Convoy

A demonstration was held in Calgary, Alberta, on Saturday, January 29, in support of a national trucker convoy that crossed the country to Ottawa protest a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for cross-border travel.

The so-called “Freedom Convoy” set off from British Columbia on Sunday, January 23, and arrived in Ottawa on Friday ahead of a two-day protest scheduled in the city for Saturday and Sunday.

The rally in Calgary was one of several solidarity demonstrations organized on Saturday in other towns and cities across Canada, including Vancouver, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Victoria.

A convoy of demonstrators also filled a section of Highway 4 in southern Alberta near the US-Canada border crossing in Coutts, CBC reported.

Police in Alberta issued a travel advisory and warned of traffic disruptions into Saturday evening.

As of January 15, Canada has required truck drivers to be fully vaccinated or face a two-week quarantine period when crossing back into Canada from the US.

On January 22, the US Department of Homeland Security began requiring “non-US individuals” to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination when entering the country through land ports and ferry terminals at both the US-Mexico and US-Canada borders. Credit: Anonymous via Storyful
