Calhoun team makes manufacturing skills competition final 4

Apr. 21—A Calhoun Community College team has made the national final four in a manufacturing skills competition.

The Project MFG National Advanced Manufacturing Championship will be May 8-12 in Greenville, South Carolina, and will be featured in the reality web series "Clash of Trades."

Calhoun will face Minnesota State College Southeast, Southwestern Illinois College and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology at the Greenville Technical College Center for Manufacturing Innovation Center.

Members of the Calhoun team are welders Ty Whitson and Hunter Willingham and computer numerical control programmer April Lewis. The team is led by machining instructors Tad Montgomery, George Cassimus and Larry Owens and welding instructor Matt Jones.

Schools from across the nation competed in Project MFG's Integrated Advanced Manufacturing Competition series season.

In February, 16 teams competed in the regionals at Calhoun, Southwestern Illinois College and Wichita State University Technical College. The teams were challenged to complete a project that consisted of machining multiple pieces on a five-axis machine and welding a pressure vessel.
