California Has 91 of the Top 100 Expensive Zip Codes, And It's No Surprise
Anyone who's ever been to California can understand why it's a desirable place to live. Beautiful weather, a gorgeous coastline, and multiple gigantic industries are some of the reasons why more than one in ten Americans reside in the state. But all those homes come at a cost, and it's not a major surprise that on PropertyShark’s list of the top 100 most expensive zip codes in the U.S. for 2019, California has 91 of them.
For the third year in a row, Atherton, California’s 94027 zip code, prevailed as the number one most expensive zip code in the U.S., with the median home's sales price clocking in at $7 million. Its close proximity to Silicon Valley makes it a perfect place for tech giants to call home, and while it lacks shops and restaurants there are no shortage of mega-mansions lining every block. It's also the wealthiest town in the country in terms of median household incomes, at $450,000.
San Francisco proper houses 13 of the priciest zip codes, which is the most of any other city. As far as counties go, Los Angeles County is the most expensive county, with 21 of the high-priced zip codes. The Bay Area overall holds a whopping 51 of the country’s priciest zip codes. Talk about cash money on the West Coast, y'all.
Californian cities don’t always get all of the cred for being pricey AF, though. New York churned out the second-highest number of priciest zip codes. New York City, obviously, made the list. But this year an unsuspecting borough broke into the top 100: Brooklyn with its Red Hook and Carroll Gardens zip codes. It's the first time a Brooklyn zip code made its way onto the list, if you can believe it.
Other expensive zips on the list include ones in Massachusetts (lookin’ at you, Boston), Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maryland, Florida (think: Miami Beach), and Arizona.
Whether you do or don't live in any of these top expensive zip codes, you probably feel both bad and grateful either way. Cheers to that!
