California City in a ‘leadership and financial crisis’: Grand Jury report

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — California City residents are still awaiting a formal response from local leaders after a Kern County Grand Jury report showed they are in a leadership and financial crisis.

High turnover rates and dysfunction are a few of the terms used in the Grand Jury report.

With 7 city managers over the past two years, the report says putting together a long-term plan for the city is nearly impossible.

And money is dwindling in the city. Around $500,000 in taxes have not been collected from local cannabis shops.

Earlier this month, the city’s police department conducted a use-of-force investigation after an officer shot a dog. The department determined the shooting was justified.

But locals say this incident has put a spotlight on other potential problems throughout the city.

“This isn’t about hating police. This is about, you know. Let’s get it right,” Joe Medrano, California City resident said.

The grand jury report ended with recommending the city to hire a full-time city manager by June 1, and a deputy city manager and finance director by July 1.
