California Coronavirus: Latest Updates On Cases, Orders, Closures

CALIFORNIA — The state of California is calling on a wide range of medical professionals, including retirees and medical students, to help the state treat new coronavirus patients through a new program, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday.

Through the program, California Health Corps, the state hopes to add several thousand new health care workers, who will be compensated for their work, Newsom said. The new push comes as the state's number of coronavirus-related hospitalizations has doubled within the last four days, while the number of patients housed in intensive care units has tripled, according to Newsom.

At a news conference, Newsom described the effort as a "call to action" for the state's health care workers as coronavirus cases grow in California and across the country.

Last week, Newsom signed an order halting all evictions for renters impacted by the new coronavirus outbreak in California. The moratorium will be in effect through May 31, starting in time to protect renters in advance of their April rent payments.

Earlier in the week, Newsom announced that several major banks will offer California residents a 90-day grace period for mortgage payments during the outbreak. Wells Fargo, Citi Bank, JPMorgan Chase and U.S. Bank, as well as nearly 200 state-chartered banks and credit unions will offer deferrals, Newsom said.

There were more than 165,800 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States and 3,178 deaths as of Tuesday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University. 149 of those deaths were in California. The U.S. has the most confirmed coronavirus cases in the world.
