California Costco worker returns nearly $4,000 left behind by customer, becomes employee of the month

A California Costco employee does right by one of its members by returning nearly $4,000 he found during one of his shifts end of August.

John Sotelo, an employee at a Costco Warehouse in Clovis, was putting away cases of water when he noticed something on one of the pallets, ABC affiliate KFSN-TV reported.

After taking a closer look, it turned out to be an envelope with $3,940 inside. Sotelo immediately informed his managers of the find.

His managers were able to locate the customer by checking surveillance footage and then pulling the matched Costco identification number, according to ABC30.

“It was crazy because when my manager walked me outside and the member was right there. She was shaking my hand for like a good 20 seconds. So, I’m like dang,” Sotelo said in a video interview with the station.

The woman expressed to Sotelo how grateful she was that he had found the money she'd forgotten.

“I’m so glad that you found this. It's for my kids to go to school,” the member told Sotelo.

Sotelo told her he was happy to help.

Sotelo became employee of the month because of his good deed. He'd set a goal to do more of them starting Aug. 1.

Now, his name is on a plaque inside that Costco location, ABC30 reported.
