Nov. 21—While California Democrats left the convention last weekend unsure who they want to replace the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein next year, their decision was firm on who they want to challenge Republican incumbent David Valadao.

The state's Democratic Party announced its decision this week to endorse Rudy Salas, the former state assemblyman, as their pick for the next representative of California's 22nd Congressional District.

U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla, who represents California and endorsed Salas last month, said the former assemblyman is "a true champion for Valley families."

"Rudy comes from humble beginnings, working in the fields with his family — and I know he will never forget his roots," Padilla wrote in a news release. "In Congress, Rudy will be a strong partner in delivering for Valley schools, seniors and veterans while helping ensure that working families have access to safe drinking water and affordable life-saving medicines."

Salas' campaign has already earned support from Congressional Hispanic Caucus, House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, chair of the California Congressional Delegation Zoe Lofgren, State Attorney General Rob Bonta, State Controller Malia Cohen, and civil rights champion Dolores Huerta, along with labor unions and councils.

In response to the state party's endorsement, Salas said he's honored to have the support of California Democrats. He cited the party's efforts in lowering costs and access to safe drinking water for working families as part of a resume he believes warrants a congressional seat.

"With the holidays around the corner, I'm thankful and blessed to have the endorsement and support of the Democratic Party and our local party faithful who put in the hard work to make a difference in our community," Salas said.
