California lawmakers prepare to debate Gov. Newsom's last minute climate push

Democratic California legislative leaders signaled Monday they’re prepared to support climate-related proposals Gov. Gavin Newsom presented weeks ahead of the state legislature’s deadline to pass policy. Newsom on Friday announced a handful of proposals he wants the legislature to pass including: Put California’s 2045 goal to be carbon neutral into state law Set a new target to cut the state’s greenhouse gas emissions to 55% below the 1990 level by 2030 Set new rules to keep oil wells at least 3,200 feet from schools, parks and homes Create a pathway for the state to reach 100% clean electricity retail sales by 2045 by setting a goal to reach 90% by 2035 and 95% by 2040. Establish a framework to regulate carbon removal, capture, use and sequestration.
