In California: The news of the day, from the state that you love

Whether you live in California, have left California, want to live in California or would never live in California (but closely track its every move), I have a newsletter for you.

Introducing In California, a Golden State roundup of the latest stories you'll want to read from USA TODAY Network newsrooms across the state. It's the essence of California, wrapped in an email, brought to you Monday through Friday.

Sign up here and you're set for your first newsletter delivery. It's free.

California may not be the center of the world (yes it is) but it matters, and our voices carry. We lead the pack on sustainability, have some of the best farmland anywhere, set the pace on technology, are a global economic force and thrive because people who call it home come from all over the world.

Oh, and it's super expensive and many of us work two or three jobs to make it.

I'm Arlene Martínez, your guide to life here, through the news of the day. Most days I write from Ventura County, just up the coast from my hometown near San Diego.

My family immigrated from Mexico to California, a move that gave me many educational and work opportunities and allowed me to explore our state's vast natural beauty. I’m grateful for that and to live in a state I love, even as my dollar stretches less and less.

So what will be inside In California?

Hi! I'm Arlene Martinez and I write the In California newsletter.
Hi! I'm Arlene Martinez and I write the In California newsletter.

Breaking news, investigations and exclusive content, such as residents doing big things and the stories behind stories. I break down policy in a way you can understand and share your perspectives on state and national stories.

You might not know this, but there are about 100 journalists working in USA TODAY Network newsrooms across California. Our recent merger expanded our reach.

We're your neighbors, working hard to tell your stories.

I also include the amazing work done at other media outlets. Some of the content — theirs and ours — is behind a paywall. When it works for you, consider subscribing.

Now, the only things left to do are to sign up and then let me know what you think — both are free. Reach out anytime at avmartinez@gannett.com or on Twitter @avmartinez. No sunset is too benign, no taco too ordinary.

Thanks again for signing up for In California. Let's talk soon, en inglés o español. Bienvenidos!
