California Residents Startled by Lightning as Fatality Reported

A woman and her two dogs were fatally struck by lightning in Pico Rivera as thunderstorms hit southern California on June 22, local media reported.

ABC 7 identified the woman as 52-year-old Antonia Mendoza. Her dogs were named Luna and Chubby, Fox 11 said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt Patrick Morey told the Los Angeles Times, "There’s a one-in-a-million chance of something like this happening and it happened.”

The National Weather Service warned of “dangerous lightning over land/water.”
