California sees unprecedented demand for unemployment benefits due to COVID-19 outbreak

California is processing an unprecedented number of unemployment insurance claims triggered by the COVID-19 outbreak. The state is releasing new numbers every Thursday. For the week ending March 21, the Employment Development Department processed 186,809 claims, which is a 363% increase from the same week in 2019.
