California State faculty members stage 5-day strike

(KRON) — The California Faculty Association plans to strike all 23 campuses including California State East Bay in Hayward on Monday morning. This strike is happening across the state and is set to last until Friday, which will affect more than 400,000 students statewide.

The students return Monday morning for the first day of the spring semester with the possibility of not having a professor in the classroom.

The group is looking for a 12 percent pay raise smaller class sizes, more counselors, extended parental leave, gender-inclusive restrooms, and safety provisions when interacting with campus police.

In total, the California Faculty Association represents about 29,000 professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors, and coaches. The association serves almost 500,000 students statewide.

Over the weekend its colleagues of 1,100 skilled trade workers did reach a tentative agreement which is separate from Monday’s group strike.

In a press release, the California Faculty Association said the decision to strike this week was not easy but is needed.
