Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is getting a PlayStation 4-exclusive alpha test, featuring a new multiplayer mode.

Announced at Gamescom 2019's Opening Night Live event on Monday (August 19), the test will give players the chance to try out the new 2v2 Gunfight mode on five different maps.

It starts on Friday, August 23 and finishes on Sunday, August 25, and will be free for all PS4 players, even those without a PS Plus subscription.

A beta will become available later in the year for all other consoles, which will test out the multi-platform crossplay feature for multiplayer.

Back in May, Activision released a first-look trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, as well as revealing that making split-second decisions will affect the outcome of the game.

"This is an all-new Modern Warfare reimagined in every way," said Dave Stohl, co-studio head of Infinity Ward. "We are creating an emotionally charged experience that’s inspired by the headlines in the world today, where the rules are grey and battle lines are blurred."

Patrick Kelly, creative director and co-studio head of Infinity Ward, added: "Every design decision has been made with our players in mind."

Modern Warfare will attempt to "unite" its gaming community by allowing PC and console players to play together through crossplay support. Developers are also eliminating the traditional season pass, so that they can deliver more free maps as well as post-launch events.

The game will feature a new engine, which promises to bring an immersive and photo-realistic experience.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is scheduled for release globally on October 25 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
