The new Call of Duty will feature a single-player campaign, developer Activision Blizzard has confirmed.

The announcement was made during the company's quarterly earnings call, where it also confirmed that approximately 8% of its employees were to be laid off.

Speaking about the as-yet-untitled game, Rob Kostich, President of Activision, said (via Forbes): "It’s going to feature an entirely new campaign, a huge and expansive multiplayer world, and of course some fun co-op gameplay.

"But from day one, what gets me really excited, is every time we’ve shown this title internally, it just creates a ton of buzz. Now I wish I could tell you a lot more right now but unfortunately you’re gonna have to wait, but I think it’s going to be really worth it. We can’t wait to share with the world."

CEO Bobby Kotick added that he hadn't "seen this much enthusiasm that I can remember almost ever" over a new release.

While no details have been given about the game, it was described in the call as "a great step forward in the franchise that is also rooted in some of the franchise’s important history".

The company confirmed that its financial results for 2018 “were the best in our history", although around 800 members of staff are expected to be laid off.

According to IGN, the layoffs are occurring in 'non-game development areas of the business'.
