Call the Midwife star Stephen McGann has teased plenty of drama ahead for the Turner family in the series' upcoming Christmas special.

Speaking to Radio Times and other media ahead of the festive episode, the actor revealed that something will come back to "haunt" the Turners, in a plot which will continue to play out across the upcoming season.

"There is plenty to involve the Turners as a family this year, and there are stories that come out throughout the series," McGann, who plays Dr Patrick Turner, said.

"Let's just say things come back to haunt the Turners and there's a lot of real drama there."

While the actor didn't reveal exactly what would be haunting the family, it was previously revealed in the episode's synopsis that Doctor Turner and his wife Shelagh (Laura Main) would receive a parcel from foster daughter May Tang's (April Rae Hoang) mother, who resides in Hong Kong.

Alongside the drama, McGann also teased "beautiful moments" ahead for the Turner couple and their children - May, Timothy (Max MacMillan), Edward (Ned Shaw) and Angela (Alice Brown).

"There are also beautiful moments because, as you know, the Moon mission features this year," he said, adding that the Apollo 11 landing scene is a particularly "lovely" one for the family.

Elsewhere in the festive episode, Nancy Corrigan (Megan Cusack) commits to staying at Nonnatus House after daughter Colette (Francesca Fullilove) is offered a place to stay there, while Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) becomes convinced it could be her last Christmas.

Meanwhile Kulvinder Ghir will also guest star in the special, with his character Kulvir Sharma being announced earlier this week.

"We were delighted that Kulvinder agreed to work with us this year – not least because he is an absolute joy!" the show's official Instagram account shared in a post. "The cast absolutely adored him – his talent, humour and warmth endeared him to everyone on set."

Call the Midwife airs its Christmas special on December 25 at 8.15pm, and then returns for series 13 on Sunday, January 7 at 8pm on BBC One.
