Call the Midwife had a heartbreaking twist in its adoption storyline on Sunday (February 17).

The episode saw Shelagh (Laura Main) and Doctor Turner (Steven McGann) send their foster daughter Mae off to school for the first time.

However, heartbreak was soon in store for the couple as the adoption agency informed them that it had found a permanent home for their foster daughter, which meant she would soon be taken away from them against their wishes.

And viewers just couldn't cope:

"Let them adopt her," said one viewer. "And eh, you’re wrong. A child does remember certain things from childhood.

"If Shelagh and Patrick don't adopt May I’m gonna cry," added another.

However, there is hope the Turners could adopt Mae themselves and this could all have a happy ending before the series is out.

Considering the penultimate episode to the current eighth series is next week, we sure hope a resolution can be reached that means Mae can stay with the Turners - and viewers think so too.

Here are a few of their reactions:

"Who wouldn’t want lovely parents like Shelagh and Doctor Turner," said one viewer.

"Dr Turner and Shelagh are gonna adopt little Mae," added another.

"All will end well."

Here's hoping the couple and Mae will get the happy ending everyone wants for them.

Call the Midwife continues next Sunday (February 17) on BBC One.
