Call the Midwife star Helen George has promised there will be "lots of babies" in season 13 of the BBC One drama.

Discussing the upcoming season during a recent appearance on Zoe Ball's Radio 2 breakfast show, the actress said: "We're filming at the moment. So I'm sort of discovering the stories as we go along. It's another exciting year, lots of babies."

Although George, who plays Nurse Trixie Franklin, said she couldn't give too much else away, she did go on to tease: "There's a few shocks."

The update comes shortly after it was revealed that Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) and Miss Higgins (Georgie Glen) will "abandon Poplar" for the coast of Sussex in episode five.

The show's official Instagram account posted a behind-the-scenes photo of the pair filming on the beach with an expectant mother, teasing in the caption: "Have Nurse Crane and Miss Higgins abandoned Poplar for the delights of the English Riviera? And who is that young mother-to-be that they're attending to....?"

The upcoming season, which will kick off with a 90-minute Christmas special this December, will also introduce two new cast members.

Newcomers Renee Bailey and Natalie Quarry will play pupil midwives Joyce Highland and Rosalind Clifford, respectively.

Teasing what fans can expect to see from the new recruits, the show's creator and writer, Heidi Thomas OBE, said: "Newcomers Joyce and Rosalind arrive with much to learn, and much to give.

"And yet even as man prepares to walk on the moon, we see them grappling with life's eternal questions: Who are we? What is love? And where do we belong?"

Call the Midwife has also been renewed for two more seasons, meaning it will remain on air until 2026.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
