Call the Midwife star Olly Rix has cryptically addressed rumours that he is exiting the show.

Last September, a report from The Sun claimed that the actor had been written out of the BBC show as Matthew Aylward, with the ongoing 13th season set to be his last.

While the broadcaster is yet to confirm or deny the rumour, Olly himself appears to have responded to the speculation, revealing he is part of the show "for now".

“It’s great being part of the Call the Midwife family. For now," he told OK! Magazine.

Olly added: “You’ve got to watch to the end of this series. There are a few surprises ahead, a few bumps in the road. We’ll see how much longer I’m part of the family!”

The actor was then asked what plans he has for the year ahead, confirming he has some work lined up in the US.

“I’ll be doing some… American stuff, I think," he said. "But I can’t say just yet. Sorry, hopefully you’ll find out soon.”

Olly has been a staple of Call the Midwife since season 10, and his future on the series appeared to be locked in after last year's season 12 finale in which Matthew and Trixie Franklin (Helen George) tied the knot.

Speaking at the time to Digital Spy, the actor suggested that he wanted to see more of his character, especially after the show was renewed through to 2026.

"At the moment, all I’m thinking about is Call the Midwife because that’s in front of me, and I don’t know what the future holds," he said.

"I don’t know if the show wants me until 2026. They might not want to go there. I don’t know. One never really knows but as far as I’m concerned, I’m not looking for the next thing.

"I’m not looking to catch the next branch. I’m gripping the branch I’m on at the moment, and giving it everything I’ve got."

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
