Who should you call about a stray dog? (It’s not the CCSPA)

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – If you find a stray dog in the Central Valley, your first instinct might be to call Central California SPCA – but the CCSPCA will not be able to help as they no longer accept stray or abandoned animals. So what do you do? Depending on where you are in the Central Valley, each city has a different agency that you should call if you come across a stray dog.

Atwater

Since Atwater is in Merced County, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the Animal Services for the county. To contact animal services, you can call 209-385-7436.

Chowchilla

In the City of Chowchilla, the police department’s animal control division provides animal control services for the city. On their website, it says that all Animal Control issues should be directed to the police department at 559-665-8600.

Clovis

For stray dogs in Clovis, you can contact the Clovis Animal Receiving & Care Center at 559-324-2450.

Fresno

As of July 1, 2022, Central California SPCA no longer provides animal control within the City of Fresno. On its website, it says that all stray animals must be taken to Fresno Animal Center, located at 5277 Airways Blvd., Fresno. You can contact them at (559) 621-7387.

Hanford

For the City of Hanford, the Kings County Animal Services houses animals for Hanford and Leemore. Types of calls Animal Services responds to include bite cases, restraint issues, animals running at large and welfare checks (neglect, cruelty cases, animal abuse).  You can contact them at 559-852-2525 and their non-emergency dispatch at 559-584-9276.

Kerman

In the City of Kerman, animal control is under the police department. The Kerman Animal Shelter is located at 15315 W California Avenue but is only a temporary holding facility and does not conduct adoptions. Impounded dogs are held for six business days, not including the day of impoundment. You can contact animal control at 559-842-0297.

Los Banos

In Los Banos, animals are regulated by the Police Department’s Code Enforcement Animal Control Division. For animal control questions or assistance, you can call the animal shelter at 209-827-7089. The animal shelter is located at 1010 Airport Road, Los Banos.

Madera

For Madera, as it is in Madera County, the Madera County Animal Shelter and Services will take care of the animal control services. For stray dogs, residents are asked to file a found animal report with the Madera Animal Shelter. The Madera Animal Shelter can be reached at 559-675-7891.

Merced

In the City of Merced, if you want to report stray animals you should call the Merced Police Department’s Animal Control Services at 209-385-4720. Merced’s Police Department Animal Control Services unit is responsible for picking up stray animals.

Porterville

Porterville’s Police Department provides animal control services to the city and operates the animal shelter facility in Lindsay. To request animal services you can contact 559-782-7400.

Reedley

For the City of Reedley, stray dogs can be brought to Fresno Humane Animal Services during regular hours. You can call or text their dispatch office at 559-600-7387 to request a pick-up.

Selma

In the City of Selma, the police department now manages animal services for the city. They are located at 2831 W. Front St, Selm, and on the city’s website it says the animal services team is available to respond to calls for service Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (dog bites, sick and injured, vicious animals). All non-priority calls will be referred to the Animal Services team for response the following business day. They can be reached at 559-896-2525.

Tulare

The City of Tulare’s website says that Tulare Animal Services provides services to ensure the public is safe from dangerous animals and keeps the community safe from stray dogs. For animal concerns or complaints, you can call 559-687-2288 or use the online reporting option for less urgent matters.

Visalia

In Visalia, you can contact Animals Services Dispatch at 559-713-4957 to report a stray dog. On Visalia’s website, it says appointments are encouraged for strays/found animals and to call 559-713-4700 to schedule an appointment.
