Callaway revitalization: Small town gears up to open Slim Chickens, Whataburger, Burger King

CALLAWAY— The city of Callaway is on track to revitalize the small town with new and refinished developments.

Callaway city officials approved in November of 2021 the development orders to build three restaurants along Tyndall Parkway: Slim Chickens, Whataburger and Burger King.

“We’re super excited to have these new businesses come to Callaway,” said Callaway City Manager Ed Cook. “Thanks to the help of our partnering economic developer, NextSite, they’ve represented our community nationally, and we’re able to bring more business to the area.”

According to city officials, the new restaurants are simultaneously being built and will resemble the design of the other Bay County locations. Official opening dates of the new developments are not yet announced, but Cook but anticipates completion dates later this year.

The corporate offices did not respond to email inquiries for comment by deadline.

Slim Chickens, located at 518 S. Tyndall Parkway next to RibCrib, will be the third location in Bay County, with other locations in Panama City and Lynn Haven.

The brand expanded its franchise to Bay County in 2020 as Florida’s first restaurant location and has since opened three additional stores across the Panhandle. According to the company's website, Slim Chickens brings flavors of fresh and premium chicken tenderloins, wings and sandwiches hand-dipped in buttermilk each day, lightly hand-breaded and cooked to order.

The menu also includes salads and Delta Sides — from fries and Ranch chips to mac and cheese, coleslaw and potato salad, as well as fried pickles, fried okra and fried mushrooms.

Whataburger, located at 702 N. Tyndall Parkway across from the Callaway Walmart, will also open as the third location in Bay County, with other Lynn Haven and Panama City Beach locations.

Whataburger operates in 14 states, with more than 30 locations in Florida alone. The menu features all-time favorites of patty melts, chicken sandwiches and burgers, along with a variety of sides, including desserts and milkshakes.

The new location is currently seeking applicants for restaurant managers, offering benefits including competitive salaries, opportunities for career growth and development, and bonus programs. For more information, visit avature.net.

A remodeled Burger King restaurant is set to be completed at 107 N. Tyndall Parkway, adjacent to McDonald’s. As the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world, the franchise will grow to become the eighth operating location in Bay County.

Cook said these developments are just the start for the growing community as city officials continue with infrastructure improvements to the town with plans to add more developments.

The city plans to add 15 additional businesses to the Beacon Point Plaza and more around the city, including five restaurants, two hotels and two convenience stores. In addition, new projects are already underway for an Aldi grocery store, Hampton Inn Hotel, and CEFCO convenience store.

“The city is growing tremendously, and the biggest benefit is the variety and availability of local businesses to our citizens,” Cook said. “We’re just blessed with the growth and all of this has been sparked through the redevelopment of Tyndall Air Force Base.”
