Caller-Times Christmas Appeal: Donate to spread cheer to children in need

The Caller-Times Children's Christmas Appeal is starting off with great generosity from the Coastal Bend community.

So far, thanks to donors, $16,915 has been raised for the annual Christmas campaign.

As of the same time last year, the Children's Appeal had raised $35,668.

The Odyssey After School Enrichment Program in Rockport is one of the seven agencies helping raise money for unfortunate children in South Texas, and Executive Director Tiffany Collie said the campaign gives a child Christmas and keeps the spirit of the holiday alive.

Collie said she remembered a father raising three kids while working three jobs and struggling to make ends meet.

"We were able to help him that year with Christmas when he didn't know how he was going to make the holiday happen for his kids," Collie said. "That was all due to the Children's Appeal. The funding helped his kids have a great Christmas in their home."

Since 1973, The Caller-Times has reported the struggle of needy children and their families during the holiday season. All of the money donated to the Christmas Appeal campaign benefits the children because all overhead costs are borne by the Caller-Times, United Way of the Coastal Bend and participating agencies.
