Who should be the Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week?

Aces across the Corpus Christi area in baseball and softball were dominant last week and several are finalists for the Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week.

The Caller-Times is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close on Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.

Calallen's Justin Lamkin tossed a no-hitter, striking out 21 batters against Kerrville Tivy, coming an error away from a perfect game.

Mathis had a hurler on each diamond as a finalist for Athlete of the Week.

Baseball's Julius Rivas struck out 20 in a loss to Goliad and softball's Anyssia Mendoza punched out 18 in a win against Taft.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at ctsports@caller.com, by messaging the Caller-Times through its Facebook page, or on Twitter @CallerSports.

THIS WEEK'S NOMINEES

• Monica Carrillo, IWA softball — Carrillo smacked two home runs going 2 for 3 with five RBI in a win against rival John Paul II.

• Brooke Castillo, Alice softball — Castillo earned a win in the circle and was 3 for 4 with six RBI and a grand slam in the Coyotes win against Laredo Cigarroa.

• Navaeh Lanter, Flour Bluff softball — Lanter came off the basketball court and immediately made an impact on the diamond with a 4 for 5 night with two triples, one double and five RBI against Victoria East.

• Justin Lamkin, Calallen baseball — Lamkin threw a no-hitter, striking out 21 batters, coming an error away from a perfect game in a 1-0 shutout win against Kerrville Tivy.

• Jaxon Mabile, Ingleside boys powerlifting — Mabile set four regional records, including outright records in the squat (700 lbs.) and total (1,740 lbs.) in winning the 181-pound division at the regional powerlifting meet to qualify for state.

• Anyssia Mendoza, Mathis softball — Mendoza spun a gem for the Pirates, hurling a complete game shutout allowing one hit and 18 strikeouts against Taft.

• Julius Rivas, Mathis baseball — Rivas struck out 20 batters in a tough-luck loss against Goliad.

• Alexus Valdez, Tuloso-Midway girls powerlifting — Valdez won the Region V Division 2 title in the 165 pound division, with a total of 1,015 lbs. to qualify for the state meet.
