• The state school accountability report said the Alachua County school district earned a “B” rating with 58% of the total possible points. Nowhere in my lifetime has 58% been anything but a solid “F.” If the state of Florida calls 58% a “B” rating, it’s no wonder our schools are failing! Starts at the top!

• This is to the School Board of Alachua County, the board members, finance department and the union. The governor set aside money for the teachers, so upgrade the teachers and then negotiate for the rest. It’s not rocket science! And, they should have it on their first paychecks. It’s not money for everyone! … You don’t need to negotiate something the governor has handed down for teachers only.

• Hooray for the University of Florida track team, and congratulations to The Sun for giving them the credit they are so due to receive — above the fold, no less! Awesome! Awesome team, awesome media!

• We went to see “Monty Python’s Spamalot” Thursday night. It was fantastic, phenomenal, amazing — a real tour de force. We wondered how the many actors kept track of their costume changes, their songs, their dances, their words. A wonderful production at the Gainesville Community Playhouse.

• I guess I need to go back to school. I’ve learned over the last week that our government tells me the definition I was taught of a recession — two quarters of negative growth is a recession — in any event, they tell me I’m wrong and they say most economists don’t agree with it. I wish they would have told my professors at the University of Florida, and also my teachers in high school where I had economics, where that’s what we learned.

• Certain Sound Off callers should educate themselves that Joe Biden has little to do with inflation, which is worldwide, or the price of gas.

• I just wonder why we’re sending oil to China — for a good price — when we don’t have enough here. Our prices  are going up, and China is our enemy, I think most everybody knows, and I just wonder why we’re sending them oil when we need it here

• Exxon Mobile scores enormous profits on record gas prices: $2,245.62 a second. Also, Chevron earned $11.4 billion, excluding special items, up 74% from the first quarter and a whopping 247% from a year ago. Is this right? Am I really understanding why our gas prices are so high? And the gas companies are making such way, way, way over-the-top earnings. Why do they have to charge so much?

• Senate Republicans voted against a bill to fund medical care for veterans that suffered toxic exposure to chemicals during their service to our country. So, the bill failed. Need I say more?

• My opinion is that we are Gainesville citizens, we are Americans, that we need to not label ourselves as members of both political party or persuasion, but we should act and should speak out as responsible, involved, voting, thoughtful citizens.

• I am not a heavy Bible thumper, but I do believe in God and I do believe that God is trying to send us a message that we need to take care of the planet that He gave us to live in, enjoy and pass on to our children. So, I think everyone needs to do their part in taking care of what you were given as a free gift.
