• How did “a well-regulated militia” get twisted to mean “a well-armed, unregulated populace?” There is no doubt that both Sen. Rubio and Sen. Scott subscribe to and uphold the second, twisted version of the Second Amendment. With 393 million guns in this country and a population of 326 million, guns have taken over. Rubio and Scott do not care about the safety of us adults and our children, but only the money they get from groups such as the NRA and gun manufacturers.

• Thank you to Claire Rotchford, the 17-year-old who wrote a very eloquent letter to The Gainesville Sun, published in the Sunday Issues section. It was so eloquent and so heart-wrenching. I only wish that she could say her words face to face to every one of the hundred senators so she could personally hear their response to what they have done to her life and to the lives of all of our children.

• When Kat Cammack poses with an assault rifle, she is displaying the favorite tool of mass murderers who turn innocent children into ugly piles of blood and tissue. Given her financial ties to the NRA, we know she never will act to save children from the slaughter.

• I propose that every time there is a mass shooting the two senators from that state be required to immediately go to the crime scene. Maybe viewing the bodies — like decapitated children from AR-15 bullets — would remove their NRA blinders. If not, at least we would know that those senators are not human.

• An assault weapon in the hands of a 21-year-old can do just as much damage as one in the hands of an 18-year-old. Assault weapons should not be in the hands of any civilian, regardless of age.

• Aren’t we a sick and broken country? There must be something wrong with us. How else is it possible, year after year, horrific killings after killings, we can’t seem to produce a Congress interested in safeguarding even our children?

• Don’t miss Matthew McConaughey’s speech on sensible gun safety on YouTube. It’s a must-listen!

• Amendment 4 passed by two-thirds of Florida voters who wanted felons’ rights to vote restored. There was no stipulation in that amendment that all court costs and fines had to be paid first. Let’s start a movement to allow felons to vote after serving their sentence if they have entered a payment plan to pay these costs. These inmates had no intent to break the law.

• As the temperatures rise here in Florida, I am seeing more and more cars in parking lots — empty cars — with the engines running. I am disgusted and appalled that people can be so selfish that they are willing, just for their own comfort, to increase the effects on climate change and to force all the other patrons to inhale the pollutants from their car. This is just unbelievable.

• Most politicians don’t keep their promises, but President Biden has. He promised to destroy the fossil fuel industry — oil and gas — and also coal. He’s virtually done both. On Election Day, the price of gas was about $2.15 a gallon. That was the good ol’ days. A year ago, it was just about $3. Now, a year later, we’re at $5. He has certainly destroyed the fossil fuel industry and people won’t invest anymore.

• Fox hosts are trying to dismiss the Jan. 6 hearings as just liberal bias against Trump, but if that was true, they should have let their viewers see for themselves. Fox hosts are hiding the truth because many of them supported Trump’s lies from the beginning. I wish everyone would watch the hearings on C-SPAN and see the evidence for themselves.
