• It’s unfortunate that the person who wrote the letter to the editor which was published July 20, 2022, titled “Who to believe?”, had not read the very fine column written by Dr. Richard Scher which explains a lot of what was behind the column that appeared in the paper from President Fuchs and the other person. As a former employee at the University of Florida, and also one who received her degree there, I am well aware of the history of the University of Florida, and there are many times when the history leaves a little to be desired.

• The majority of the Gainesville city commissioners have forgotten the definition and concept of photosynthesis, whereby trees and plants convert carbon dioxide and simultaneously release oxygen. By approving developers’ plans to clear cut thousands of acres of trees, our commissioners have contributed to climate warming locally. The approvals of this destruction and resulting heat must stop immediately.

• I have read that the community is outraged over the K-9 incident that involved Terrell Bradley. I’m outraged that the K-9 has been put on a 90-day suspension or whatever while they review what occurred. What occurred was we had a felon who did not stop when police asked. He finally stopped, he fled the scene, then he had a gun, he had ammunition — both of which are contrary to what felons can do — and not to mention he had drugs. So, of course the police went in pursuit.

• Does anyone remember when Rick Scott refused to allow words such as “climate change,” “global warming” and “sea-level rise” in any state documents when he was governor? Well, I do, and I recall that none of these policies were in writing, just word of mouth so he could be a non-denier denialist claiming that he wasn’t a scientist when asked about it. And we lost Bill Nelson in the Senate for this guy — sad!

• If you desire to have a divisive school board, vote for those candidates who are endorsed by the Gainesville Sun.

• In The Sun’s report of how the Senate voted last week, I noticed that there were five confirmations on the docket. All five were approved, but Sen. Scott and Sen. Rubio voted “no” on all five nominees. I contacted their offices to find out specifically why they didn’t feel these people were qualified for the job, but of course have received no answer. That leads me to believe that they probably didn’t have a reason. They just simply voted “no.”

• We need more Democrats in Congress. Sen. Joe Manchin is no better than the Republicans who refuse to do anything about climate change. I’m outraged that they can ignore the greatest challenge we’ve ever had. It’s our grandbabies who will suffer the most because of this lack of action.

• I watched the ESPYs the other night, and I saw a bunch of people defending Brittany Griner and telling her it was a problem. It was a problem all right to try smuggling drugs into Russia. It was so wrong that she should be punished by the full extent of the Russian law. She’s a criminal — admit it!

• Attention, you people in the print media, TV and etc.! Stop referring to an unborn child as a fetus! People, it is a baby — a real human baby. Got it?
