Calling all coffee lovers: Starbucks is coming to Sanford, Maine

SANFORD, Maine — Make room, Dunkin’ and Aroma Joe’s. Starbucks is coming to Sanford.

The popular coffee shop is slated to be located inside the former Bank of America building, right next door to Pizza Hut, at the Center for Shopping at 1364 Main Street.

In July, the city’s Site Plan Review Committee approved, with conditions, a plan to redevelop the former bank into a Starbucks, complete with a drive-through window.

According to city documents, the conditions call for the applicant, Redstone Construction of Ohio, to provide the city with a landscaping plan, a planting schedule, and updates on signage and the location of the key box for first responders. The applicant also needs to reply to issues raised by the Sanford Water District.

On Nov. 2, City Planner Erin Moriarty said the review committee’s conditional approval is good for a year.

CFS Limited Partnership of Ohio owns the vacant building.

Senior Engineer Andrew Morrell, a partner of BH2M in Gorham, is the agent for the applicant. In a letter to the city in June, Morrell noted the intended site already received approval as a commercial building back in the late 1980s. As a result, the project does not need to go before the Sanford Planning Board.

“This site plan amendment is rather simple as most of the site improvements are interior to the building,” Morrell wrote.

Starbucks, which has shops throughout the United States and around the world, is known for its variety of coffees and other specialty and seasonal hot and cold drinks, as well as for its breakfast sandwiches, sweets, and more.

Currently, Starbucks shops in Biddeford, Kittery and Rochester, New Hampshire, are among those closest to Sanford.

When it comes to high-profile coffee shops, Sanford has a few stops involving two big names. Aroma Joe’s has three locations: a new shop that opened at 931 Main Street in September and two drive-throughs. Dunkin has two shops in Sanford, as well as a drive-through in Springvale.

Publicly, it is not yet known when the applicant hopes to start construction on the project or when it hopes to open in Sanford. Morrell and representatives from Starbucks and Redstone Construction did not return messages seeking comment.
