Calling all gamers: Library will host free ‘Gamers Universe’ convention including workshops, Mortal Kombat and Super Smash

The Chicago Public Library is hosting a free in-person video gaming convention called “Gamers Universe” on May 28 at the Harold Washington Library Center. According to a recent announcement from the library, the event was organized by the Chicago Teen Gamer’s Guild, a group of teens from across the city, with mentorship from CPL YOUmedia librarians.

The event is aimed at a teen audience, but gamers of all ages are invited to discover hidden gems at the indie game corner, dress up as their favorite characters as part of the cosplay competition and participate in a scavenger hunt.

“The City of Chicago and Chicago Public Library are committed to opportunities for youth. We’re excited to present a first-of-its-kind, teen-led gaming convention,” said Chicago Public Library Commissioner Chris Brown. “This convention will be filled with activities that reflect the positive and inclusive gaming community, while also amplifying teen voice and choice.”

Workshops and discussion panels include virtual reality demos with Redline VR, storytelling techniques with Escape Artistry, board games and role-playing games, murder mysteries, and costume making with a professional costume designer.

Gamers will also have a chance to show off their skills with a Mortal Kombat X tournament beginning at 1:30 p.m. and a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament at 3 p.m. While the library closes at 5 p.m., those battling it out in the Super Smash tournament can stay after-hours until 9 p.m.

11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 28 at the Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State St.; more information at chipublib.bibliocommons.com and sign-ups for the tournaments are at start.gg
