Caltrans hosting free dumpster disposal day this weekend

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Are you wanting to get a head start on spring cleaning? This weekend, you can dump unwanted household items at no cost.

Caltrans is hosting a free dump day event at the Caltrans maintenance yard located at 8502 Railroad Ave. in Santee on Saturday, March 2. The event takes place from 8 a.m. to noon, or until the site reaches capacity.

The dump site will not accept hazardous waste including batteries, paint, oils and flammable materials; construction materials such as concrete, dirt, asphalt and asbestos; wood waste, and refrigerators and freezers. Compressed gas and aerosols will also not be accepted.

Caltrans will accept four mattresses and four tires (without rims included) per household.

The event is part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s $1.2 billion Clean California initiative, a multiyear effort by Caltrans to keep the state’s roads and waterways litter-free.

Since 2021, Caltrans District 11 has held more than 40 free dump events across San Diego and Imperial counties.

Caltrans wants to remind people to properly secure all cargo loads prior to getting on the roads. Loads that are not properly tied down or secured by other means may not be accepted.
