The Cambridge City Schools Board of Education recently approved replacing shingle roofs on three buildings in the district.

The resolution authorizing a contract with Garland/DBS Inc. was approved during a special session on Dec. 30 at the Garfield Administrative Center on South Eighth Street in Cambridge.

The estimated cost of the project is $1,045,747, according to school officials.

Garland/DBS Inc. will furnish all material, labor, equipment and tools necessary for the shingle roof replacements at Cambridge Intermediate School, Cambridge Primary School and the Garfield Administrative Center.

“We received bids for this project earlier in the year with the idea that we would pursue them in the spring of 2022, however, the pricing we received is only good until the end of year,” explained Cambridge Superintendent Dan Coffman of the need for a special session to address the contract.

“With the price of materials predicted to increase, we needed to move forward with this contract prior to the end of 2021 to avoid having to re-bid the project and potentially end up paying significantly more money to complete the same work.”

The cost of the project will be paid by the one-time Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds, better known as COVID-19 relief funds.

"The district has applied for and expects to receive the ESSER funds," said Coffman.

Any remaining balance would be paid from the district's Permanent Improvement Fund.

The project is expected to begin in late spring and be completed by the end of summer in 2022.
