New schools and facility renovations are coming to four South Jersey school districts to address overcrowding and aging infrastructure, the state announced Thursday.

Two schools in Bridgeton will undergo renovations and two new schools will be built in Camden City as part of the 16 projects approved by the New Jersey Schools Development Authority. Pleasantville and Salem City will also each receive one new school.

The SDA also approved projects to address overcrowding in six North Jersey districts and three Central Jersey districts.

Earlier this year, the SDA approved an addition to Bridgeton High School to accommodate 300 more students along with two new schools in North Jersey.

The 19 projects approved this year will join the SDA's eight active projects. In the past decade, the SDA has completed 31 projects across the state.

All of the new schools in South Jersey will replace other facilities, according to the plan. The schools in Camden and Salem will address serious facility problems at older schools and serve students in pre-K through eighth grade. The one in Pleasantville will address overcrowding and serve kindergarten through fifth graders.

Funding for the 16 projects will come from the $1.55 billion allocated to the SDA in the state’s 2023 budget. The SDA also received $350 million for projects in regular operating districts/districts other than the 31 it oversees.

The most recently completed SDA project in South Jersey was Camden City High School, which opened last September. More than $140 million in upgrades to Millville Senior High School, which began in 2017, are complete except for the auditorium.
