This Camden County bakery plans a major expansion

VOORHEES – A popular family-owned and operated bakery here has big plans for a major expansion.

Justin Haig LLC, commonly known as Sweet Eats Bakery, has applied for amended site plan approval and a variance in connection with 310-318 South Burnt Mill Road, Block 26, Lots 2 & 4.

The applicant seeks to construct a 4,906-square-foot addition, a parking lot expansion and new stormwater management facilities.

The Voorhees Township Planning Board hearing will be held Wednesday, Jan. 24 7 p.m. in the public meeting room in the municipal building at 2400 Voorhees Town Center.

“Basically, we’re doing a huge parking lot; we bought the two properties next towards us,” Justin Burt, a manager at Sweet Eats, and part of the family-run business. “We’re going to add about 120 spaces of parking. And then we’re going to add another 4,000 square feet of business eventually. We don’t know when that’s going to happen but it should happen in the next two years.”

How big is Sweet Eats Bakery right now?

Sweet Eats is known for their elaborate birthday cakes and wedding cakes, in particular.

Burt said it is currently a 12,000-square-foot space.

“It definitely would be for the customers so when they come in there’ll be a bigger space for them to come in,” he added. “Right now, we’re pretty jammed on holidays so we’ll have a little bit more room for operating as well. We’re going to move the front of the store up more, so maybe about 1,000 square feet will be more for the baking aspects. We’re going to do it in stages. We’re going to do, hopefully, the parking lot this year.”

Bakery has been family owned for more than 36 years

Sweet Eats was established in 1987 by Marge and Doug Davidowich. According to the web site, Marge studied at the CIA but later moved onto become a pastry chef with the Hyatt in Cherry Hill where she met Doug, who was the food and beverage manager.

Their three children — Michael, Teri and Devon — have helped grow the business into what it is today, the web site said.

Over the years, the bakery has moved from Blackwood to Laurel Springs to Somerdale and finally Voorhees.

Doug Davidowich passed away suddenly in June 2023, but his family business continues to grow.
