With only two weeks left in the season, Camelback High School has canceled its remaining boys and girls basketball games because of COVID-related issues, said Richard Franco, a Phoenix Union High School District spokesman.

"What happened was we had some students going to protocols based on COVID," Franco said Tuesday. "Because of the way they’re able to return and come back, then have to do reconditioning, they didn't have enough players to fill out the team. It overlapped two weeks."

The canceled seasons affect all levels of the boys and girls programs, Franco said. He added that the teams had small numbers to begin with.

Camelback administrators and coaches did not respond to messages from The Republic.

Camelback isn't the only school impacted by the omicron variant this winter.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association had more than 800 sports events, from freshman to varsity games, canceled over a three-day span recently due to COVID-19 issues.

On Nov. 1, PXU began a mandate that all student-athletes, coaches, staff and volunteers would have to be vaccinated for COVID or undergo weekly tests to be able to participate in sports and extracurricular activities.

Camelback's last boys varsity basketball game was played Jan. 10 and it finished the season 0-11. The girls varsity last played on Jan. 7, and canceled their last 12 games, finishing 0-5 overall.
