Cameron Art Museum elects four new officers, including first Black board chair

Cameron Art Museum's Board of Trustees recently elected four new officers: Gregory C. Miller, Nina Murray Duff, John D. Messick II, and Dr. Acquenetta V. Wheeler.

Miller, the first Black board chair in the museum's almost 60-year history, brings with him his powerful business acumen combined with his invaluable arts experience serving on the Board of Trustees of The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.

A graduate of Lincoln University, Miller has spent 37 years in the pharmaceutical industry. He served on the board of trustees for Lincoln University, as vice chairman and on the board of managers for the Historic Christian Street YMCA.

An advocate of education as a means of fostering self-help and self-improvement for everyone, Miller established the Gregory C. Miller Endowed Scholarship at Lincoln University and the Juanita Claire Miller Memorial Scholarship at South Philadelphia High School in honor of his mother who passed away at a young age.

He currently mentors two students at the Cameron School of Business as part of the Cameron Executive Network at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Nina Murray Duff
Nina Murray Duff

Murray Duff, a resident of Wilmington for the past 10 years, brings her passion for serving the Wilmington community to her role as vice chair.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, she received her Bachelor of Arts in recreation, sports leadership and tourism hospitality. She is a lifetime member of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

John Messick II
John Messick II

Messick, a native of Wilmington who will be serving as treasurer, brings with him over 30 years of essential banking experience, combined with experience on serving on several community boards.

Messick completed his undergraduate degree in 1988 from the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a Bachelor of Arts in history.

He is active in the community where he serves on the Durham Community College Foundation Board and is past chairman of the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Messick has served in different capacities on various community boards to include N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, N.C. Museum of Life and Science, Research Triangle Regional Partnership, Durham United Way and on the Board of Trustees for The Hill Center.

Acquenetta V. Wheeler
Acquenetta V. Wheeler

Wheeler’s passion for medicine and serving her community will ensure her success as secretary.

Wheeler possesses a wealth of experience in medicine. She currently serves as a regional medical director for Optum. She has served as a regional medical director for United Healthcare of the Carolinas; chief medical officer for Maryland Community and State; and has worked as a primary care physician with specific interest in children with disabilities.

A native of Wilmington, she graduated from New Hanover High School. Wheeler enrolled to Fisk University and Meharry Medical College. She earned a Master of Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University.

Wheeler provides aid to her community in numerous ways. She serves on the Foundation Board of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She is a member of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Institutional Review Board; the Watson College of Education Dean’s Advancement Council; Alpha Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.; The Wilmington N.C. Chapter of The Links Inc.; The D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy Advisory Council; and Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
