Cameron Diaz Talks About Her Choice to Become a Mom Later in Life

As women, knowing that we are up against a ticking biological clock is an alarming reality. Additionally, there’s an unfortunate stigma that surrounds motherhood at a late age. Thankfully, this is starting to change. More and more women are becoming first-time mamas in their 40s. Cameron Diaz is one of them. The 48-year-old Charlie’s Angels actress became a new mom in December via surrogate to her beautiful baby girl Raddix. Diaz opened up on her choice to become a mom later in life in a new episode of Naomi Campbell’s YouTube series, No Filter.

Diaz and her husband Benji Madden secretly welcomed their daughter Raddix in an announcement on Instagram. “She has instantly captured our hearts and completed our family,” wrote the new parents, “We won’t be posting pictures or sharing any more details, other than the fact that she is really really cute!!” Since then, the two have stayed true to their word and maintained the privacy of their little one. But in her No Filter episode, the new mom had — well, no filter about what it’s been like raising Raddix.

In her chat with Campbell, Diaz said: “I feel like a lot of people do it the other way around … they get married, they have a family in their youth. I’m kind of doing it in the second half of my life.” The “second half of her life” she continued to say is the happiest she’s ever felt.

In between raising her daughter and working on her wine business, Avaline, Diaz called this point in her life the “sweet spot”. Adding that she feels incredibly resolved right now.

But nearing 50 years old, Diaz recognizes that her experience raising her child will look very different than her friends will.

Nevertheless, this mama is taking it all in stride, joking with Campbell: “The only pressure for me now is I have to live to be, like, 107, you know? No pressure!”

Diaz also noted that she’s found benefits in getting married later in life as well. “Marriage is also another thing ‘cause when you’re young, you become one another, you know, you melt into one another, but when you’re older and you start a marriage, you’re really aware of what it takes to become partners with one another because you’ve been individuals for so long,” she explained to Campbell.

She continued: “Having a family when you’re young…it’s like anything when you’re young: You do it. But when you’re my age and you decide to do it, it’s a real choice. You really have to work hard for it.”
