Camila Cabello says writing love songs is more 'fun' than ones about money or fame
No more writing songs about “making money” or “being a bad b****”, says Camila Cabello. She wants to sing about love instead.
The 22-year-old singer admitted as much during a Friday Q&A at her Los Angeles pop-up, an event hosted by Verizon (which owns Yahoo) to mark her sophomore album Romance. The sensory-and-musical experience in the Fairfax District unveils new Cabello tunes and merchandise.
The singer didn’t hold back. “In 2019, I’m not going to really write songs about making money or being a bad b****,” she revealed. “That’s just not what I think about, that’s not what’s important, that’s not what my life revolves around.”
Cabello said she has more fun talking “about love and real feelings, and I feel like being in love is such a huge part of people’s lives.”
Love has certainly taken up space in Cabello’s life —she has been dating singer Shawn Mendes, 21, since the summer when the two recorded the jam “Señorita.” However, as she explained to Ellen DeGeneres on Friday, she’s crushed on Mendes for quite some time.
“I met him on the Austin Mahone tour like five or six years ago,” Cabello told DeGeneres. “I for sure had a crush on him there. We were stupid … I think we both had a crush but we were being babies about it. But we’re grown now!”
In November, the couple proved that during the 2019 American Music Awards when their steamy performance of “Señorita” made headlines and they nabbed “Collaboration of the Year” for the song.
Cabello also shared with DeGeneres the inspiration for Romance, according to US Weekly. “It’s about being in love,” she said. “I was basically completely single for 20 years and it was like the intensity and adrenaline of my life was in the studio writing about an emotion that I wanted. Whereas this time, it’s just been a lot that’s happened. I’ve fallen in love and out of love and in love. And that’s basically what this album is about … falling in love and what that feels like.”
Romance is the second album for Cabello since leaving the all-girl group Fifth Harmony in 2016, reported People.
