COSHOCTON — Camp Invention for youth in kindergarten to sixth grade is expanding to a third location this summer.

Camp Invention is a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning for children. It also builds confidence, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness and problem-solving skills in a fun and engaging environment.

All materials are provided by the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Children also bring in some items from home for upcycling. Since 1990, the education program has served more than 1.9 million children and 210,000 teachers and leadership interns.

About 225 students will be participating the week of June 6 at Coshocton Elementary School, the week of June 13 at Keene Elementary School and week of June 20 at Ridgewood Elementary School.

“As a science teacher and having been involved with Camp Invention for eight years, I see that our K-6 campers are being introduced to STEM concepts and skills that are in the high school curriculum,” said Barb Snyder, director of the camp at Coshocton Elementary, in a press release. “It is wonderful to have children introduced to these concepts so early. The disciplines the children are learning — critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and creativity — will benefit them throughout their lives.”

Spearheaded by the Coshocton Foundation, many other local organizations and businesses have donated to to make the camp possible locally. For more information or to register, go to invent.org/camp.
