Campbell County boys basketball coach Aric Russell retires from coaching

Campbell County head boys basketball coach Aric Russell announced his retirement from coaching Thursday afternoon.

“I have officially retired from coaching basketball at Campbell County," he wrote on his Twitter account. "God blessed me with strong people to work for and awesome assistant coaches and great players. It has been a good run. Thank you to everyone. Coach Russell, Matthew 6:33"

Matthew 6:33 in the Bible reads “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Campbell County finished 22-12 this season, winning the 37th District and losing the 10th Region semifinals.

He won four 10th Region championships with the Camels in his career in Alexandria.

Russell won his 400th game as a boys head coach Jan. 27 against Scott. He finishes with 284 wins at Campbell County. He has 124 with Newport, leading the Wildcats to the Ninth Region champion in 2010, which was that school’s first state berth in 58 years.

Russell also won 51 games with the Newport girls program.
