Campbell man killed in Horseheads I-86 motorcycle crash, says Chemung County sheriff

A Steuben County man is dead following a motorcycle crash Saturday on Interstate 86 in the Village of Horseheads.

The Chemung County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 21-year-old Andrew Davis, of Campbell.

The crash took place around 8:20 a.m. in the eastbound lane of I-86 between the South Main Street onramp and the state Route 13 overpass, the sheriff's office said.

Witnesses to the incident advised responding deputies a 2007 Yamaha R6 motorcycle was traveling erratically and at a high rate of speed prior to the crash.

As the motorcycle approached the area of the South Main Street onramp, another vehicle had already merged onto the interstate, the sheriff's office said.

Davis rapidly accelerated and passed the other vehicle on the right shoulder of the road, causing him to kick up dirt and gravel.

Davis then lost control of the bike, crossed the highway, struck a concrete barrier, and was ejected from the motorcycle, landing in the roadway, according to investigators.

The motorcycle skidded about another 150 yards further down the interstate before coming to a stop. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Chemung County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Village of Horseheads Police Department, Town & Country Fire Department, Erway Ambulance, New York State Police, and the state Department of Transportation.
