Camping World to close Amarillo location just 6 years after reopening under new brand

Camping World of Amarillo has announced that it will be closing its location permanently on Oct. 27, just six years after it was acquired from Gander Mountain during that company's bankruptcy liquidation.

A local representative said at the time of the news of its closing, the store had approximately 45 employees, who will no longer be with the company as of Nov. 10.

With the purchase of Gander Mountain, Camping World headquartered in Lincolnshire, Illinois, reopened more than 65 of its acquired stores under its own banner, including the Amarillo location. At least two other Camping World locations have been officially announced as closing during October, in Marion, Illinois, and Kenosha, Wisconsin.  According to its website, Camping World has more than 185 locations.

While acquiring the Gander Mountain store in Amarillo, Camping World also purchased Jack Sizemore Traveland, which had been in business for more than 40 years in the area. The Amarillo location reopened in May 2018 as Gander Outdoors and later rebranded as Camping World; since the acquisition of Gander Mountain, Camping World had shifted in 2020 to closing stores that could not sell and service Recreational Vehicles (RVs).

The store employees were unaware of the closing until about a week ago. No details or comments have been released from the company on the closings, outside of a sign directing customers to its Lubbock location for future business.

"We want to thank you for the love, support, and business from our loyal customers & surrounding community for the past 6 years," a Facebook post from the Amarillo store says.
