On Campus: Fairview basketball standouts pick colleges

James Sitter and Logan Frazao helped the Fairview boys basketball team win 25 games and a District 10 championship this past winter.

The two also played key roles in Fairview winning the Region 5 title and reaching the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals, which tied a program record for the longest playoff run.

Last week both of the Tigers' senior standouts announced where they will play college ball.

Sitter recently committed to Edinboro, and Frazao chose Mount Union.

Sitter, a 6-foot 5-inch guard, averaged 14.9 points per game as a senior and went over 1,000 career points. He was an outstanding outside shooter with a team-leading 68 field goals from 3-point range. He was named to the all-region and all-District 10 teams after the season.

Edinboro went 9-17 this past winter. The Fighting Scots also landed Franklin senior guard Easton Fulmer, an all-district and all-state selection.Frazao, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward, led the Tigers with 15.3 points per game, but he built a reputation as one of the premier all-around players in D-10. He could rebound, pass, play defense and finish on the fastbreak, often with big dunks. He was named the Region 5 Player of the Year, and was a District 10 all-star.

Mount Union, an NCAA Division III program in Alliance, Ohio, went 23-5 and reached the NCAA tournament.

Frazao was also a standout football player as a wide receiver and safety for the Tigers.

WRESTLING

Former Franklin High School standout Dakota Geer has joined the Clarion University wrestling team as a volunteer assistant.

The former PIAA champion wrestled at both Edinboro and Oklahoma State. He was a three-time All-American.

SOFTBALL

Mercyhurst's softball team is still alive in the PSAC tournament, but the action in Quakertown has now been postponed for two consecutive days because of weather.

The PSAC announced that all Saturday games had been moved to Sunday. Kutztown, the No. 1 East seed, is still in contention, along with Mercyhurst, the No. 3 West seed, Bloomsburg and Shepherd. Gannon was eliminated earlier.

Bloomsburg and Shepherd will meet Sunday, and the winner will play Mercyhurst. The winner of that game will take on Kutztown in the finals.

Meanwhile, in the AMCC, Penn State Behrend is hosting the conference tournament, with the title game scheduled to be played Sunday on the Behrend campus.

Top-seeded Penn State Behrend was still in contention for the title going into Saturday after beating Medaille 3-0 Friday.

BOWLING

Technically, Bob Learn Jr. was a 2020 enshrinee of the United States Bowling Congess Hall of Fame.

Officially, though, the Erie native's honor didn't occur until April 26. That's when the USBC formally inducted Learn and five others who comprised that year's class.

The ceremony, held at The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, was delayed two years because of COVID-19 concerns.

Learn recently completed his fourth season as the bowling coach for the University of Tennessee Southern, which was known as Martin Methodist College when he was hired there.

His induction, though, was based on his PBA Tour career in general and his 1996 Flagship City Open victory in particular.

Learn, who turned 60 last month, achieved what's widely regarded as the greatest one-day performance in the tour's 63-year history. Before a live television audience on ABC and a hometown crowd of 4,500 at the former Tullio Arena, he recorded a perfect 300 game for the first of his four victories in the tournament's stepladder final.

The 1999 U.S. Open was the other significant tour title of the five Learn won.

Learn isn't the only local connection to Tennessee Southern's bowling program. Harbor Creek graduate Hayden Stippich, a junior for the Firehawks, was voted the NAIA's 2021-22 male bowler of the year.
