On Campus: Gannon, Edinboro football picked to finish in the middle of PSAC West

There is plenty of familiarity in the PSAC West football preseason poll as the usual powerhouses are on top with local teams in the middle.

IUP and Slippery Rock are tied atop the poll with three first-place votes apiece followed by Cal U in third place with the other two first-place votes. Gannon, under third-year coach Erik Raeburn, was picked to finish fourth, while Edinboro and Seton Hill are projected to tie for fifth place. Jake Nulph is in his third year as the head coach at Edinboro.

Mercyhurst, under new head coach Ryan Riemedio, was picked to finish in seventh place and Clarion rounds out the poll in eighth.

The regular season begins Sept. 1 with Gannon hosting the University of Charleston (W.Va.) on the new turf at McConnell Family Stadium. On Sept. 3, Mercyhurst travels to Alderson Broaddus in West Virginia and Edinboro heads to Franklin Pierce in New Hampshire.

Allegheny football picked 8th in PAC

The PAC put out its preseason football poll this past week and new member Allegheny was picked to finish eighth out of 11 teams. Allegheny, under fourth-year head coach Rich Nagy, joined the PAC in all sports this fall after leaving the NCAC.

Westminster is picked to win the league followed by Washington & Jefferson and Carnegie Mellon. Grove City is projected to finish fourth with Case Western in fifth, Saint Vincent in sixth and Geneva in seventh. The only teams below Allegheny were Waynesburg in ninth, Bethany at 10 and Thiel in last at 11.

O'Neill to coach Michigan Tech

Former General McLane football standout Kellen O'Neill was hired Friday to become the wide receivers coach at Michigan Tech.

O'Neill, who played two years at Slippery Rock and three seasons at Edinboro, graduated from Edinboro in 2013. He joined the Edinboro staff in 2016 as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator after working as an offensive assistant at Division I Albany in 2014 and 2015.

O'Neill was the wide receivers coach at Duquesne in 2017 and at Findlay from 2019-2020. He spent the 2021 season as the tight ends coach at Gannon before joining the Michigan Tech staff.
