Campus Highlights: Former County stars Alex Price and Frances Churchwell earn recognition

HILLSDALE COUNTY — Two former Hillsdale County student athletes were recognized for their collegiate sports performances this past week.

Alex Price is a former quarterback and state champion for the Reading Rangers. The Trine Thunder quarterback was named the NCAA DIII MIAA Football Offensive Athlete of the Week. Price led the Thunder to a 39-37 victory on the road at Olivet on Oct. 15. Price was 25-of-32 in completions for 407 yards, and he threw three touchdown passes. Price had a long pass of 52 yards.

Price had a total of 443 total yards of offense in the triple overtime win, the second-most offensive yards gained by an individual in Trine's NCAA DIII era. He had 52 yards on the ground. His first passing touchdown went to Matthew Shoemaker. He his Rodney Johnson on a 41-yard catch with four minutes remaining to cut into the Olivet lead. Price hit Brandon Kline for a crucial fourth down attempt to keep the Thunder drive alive. Price completed a pass to Kale Lawson for the game sealing two-point conversion.

In conference play, Price leads the MIAA with 59 completions, 900 passing yards, 300 yards per game, and seven touchdown passes.

Spring Arbor University junior Frances Churchwell earned her 1,000th dig in the conference match vs. Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 15. Churchwell is a junior libero from Camden, MI and a graduate of Camden-Frontier High School. Churchwell currently has 378 digs on the season, averaging 4.02 digs during a set.

Churchwell has played in 74 career matches, with a season record high of 470 digs. Churchwell joined the Spring Arbor women's volleyball team in 2020, and she is just one of the several Camden-Frontier volleyball graduates who has gone on to play in collegiate athletics.
