Campus notes: Sept. 10, 2023
Sep. 10—Kutztown University has given out awards to several faculty members.
—Dr. Brooks Emerick, professor of mathematics, was awarded Kutztown University's 2023 John P. Schellenberg Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
Emerick, a professor at KU since 2017, seeks to implement different initiatives to make industry connections for his students and allow them to connect what they learn in the classroom to real-world applications.
Emerick has had 13 works published and has hosted numerous conference/workshop proceedings.
—Dr. Carrie Yvonne Nordlund, professor of art education, received the 2023 Wiesenberger Award for Excellence in Teaching.
In 2006, Nordlund came to KU with 20 years of teaching experience and two dozen teaching awards under her belt. While at KU, Nordlund was named National Art Educator of the Year in Higher Education/Eastern Division and Pennsylvania Art Educator of the Year in Higher Education. She was inducted into the National Residence Hall Honorary after being nominated by a student.
Nordlund has published the outcomes of a reflective practice studies and models. Her practices were employed with her field students at KU and are published in an international journal.
—Dr. Gregory Setliff, biology, and Dr. Wing Hong Tony Wong, mathematics, have been awarded Kutztown University's 2023 Chambliss Faculty Research Awards for extraordinary research and scholarship endeavors.
Setliff began his career at KU in 2008. His primary entomological research focus is on the taxonomy, biodiversity and conservation of weevils. He is an internationally recognized expert in the taxonomy of weevils and has discovered, described and named three new genera and 28 new species while at KU.
He temporarily shifted his focus to the spotted lanternfly in 2014. He played a key role in designing the state and national response and organized the first international symposium of international, national and regional experts on the species.
Setliff involves students in important research experiences, leading to co-authorship on peer-reviewed publications. Of his 25 publications, KU students have co-authored 10 of them. He has inspired students to pursue research and graduate work in the field of entomology.
Wong began his career at KU in 2013. He has received the Schellenberg Award (Kutztown University), 40 Under Forty Award (Reading Eagle), Excellence in Teaching Award (National Society of Leadership and Success), Early Career Teaching Award (Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Section of the Mathematical Association of America) in addition to serving as Principal Investigator and Senior Personnel for multiple grants totaling more than $1 million.
Over the past five years, he published 21 publications in peer-reviewed research journals in five different fields. One of his pieces received an Editors' Choice Award 2023 from Discrete Mathematics.
