While Hollywood is busy perusing rails of designer frocks for this Sunday’s Oscars, choosing the right outfit could in fact mean the difference between bagging you the golden gong or going home empty handed.

Algorithm bods at fashion destination site, Lyst, have been busy working out the winning fashion formula to achieve academy award success. Using complicated ‘fashematics’, analysing 80 years of Oscar fashion and 50 years of other red carpet looks, Lyst has devised a mathematically true fashion formula that could help secure the coveted gong. The formula takes into account jewellery designer, hairstyle, dress style and designer worn by the nominee.

Last year, the fashion site used the same formula to successfully predict that Julianne Moore would win Best Actress at The Oscars. So 2016 nominees take note, especially if you’re considering any last minute changes to your outfit choice.

So, based on the formula, who’s tipped for Oscar success?

Best Actress: Brie Larson, wearing a blush dress by Gucci, with jewellery by Harry Winston

Gucci is the third luckiest designer to wear to The Oscars, but no female nominees have ever won in black Gucci. Brie is 42% more likely to win if she opts for a blush Gucci gown over a blue dress this year.

Best Supporting Actress: Kate Winslet in a black dress by Armani, with jewellery by Chopard

Doesn’t matter whether you’re male or female, Black Armani is the luckiest Oscar outfit combination ever. Winning!

Best Actor: Leonardo Di Caprio, in a black tuxedo by Armani, and black bow tie

If Leo wears this winning combination, there’s a 99.5% probability of him taking home the prize. But he needs to book himself in for a wet shave, as turning up with designer stubble will reduce his chances by 80%.

Best Supporting Actor: Tom Hardy, in a navy tuxedo by Burberry, with a black tie

British actors are 30% more likely to win if they wear a tux by a British designer, just ask Eddie Redmayne.

And what of the carpet colour? Believe it or not only 67% of Oscars ceremonies have featured a red carpet. But having been a consistent part of the show for the last 55 years, the formula predicts that this weekend’s carpet will almost certainly be red.
