Canadian Officials Have Heard Tape of Jamal Khashoggi Murder, Justin Trudeau Says
Canadian intelligence officers have heard the Turkish audio recording of Jamal Khashoggi being killed at the Saudi consulate, Prime Minster Justin Trudeau revealed on Monday.
“Yes,” Trudeau said, when asked at a press conference in Paris if Canadian authorities had heard the recordings.
Trudeau’s announcement is the first time a western leader has confirmed the tape exists, after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he’d shared it with several countries. Trudeau said he had not personally listened to the recordings.
“Canada’s intelligence agencies have been working very closely on this issue with Turkish intelligence and Canada has been fully briefed on what Turkey had to share,” Trudeau said.
Trudeau didn’t elaborate on what is on the recordings. Khashoggi — a Washington Post journalist critical of the ruling Saudi royal family — was killed on Oct. 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The Saudi regime initially feigned it had no idea what happened to Khashoggi after he entered the consulate, despite his disappearance. After an international outcry, Saudi authorities eventually conceded Khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate — but denied Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the royal family were behind the killing.
The audio recordings carry increased significance as Erdogan has been pushing for Saudi Arabia to let Turkey prosecute the culprits.
