Canadian Pacific train derails in Dodge County, leading to extensive cleanup but no apparent environmental hazard

A Canadian Pacific train derailed Tuesday in the Town of Lowell in southwest Dodge County, leading to an hours-long cleanup expected to extended late into the evening.

No one in the crew reported injuries and the train was not carrying hazardous material when it derailed about 2 p.m., said Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt at a 5 p.m. news conference.

Schmidt said 29 cars derailed and he estimates that clean up by Canadian Pacific could continue until 11 p.m.

Chris Abell, deputy chief with the Clyman, Lowell and Reeseville Fire Departments, said the cars were carrying grain and potash. There was one hazardous car that was empty that had residual petroleum product still inside of it but Abell said it was "not involved with the derailment," adding, "as far as a spill goes, there is nothing to worry about."

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also responded to the scene.

Wisconsin has had nine other train derailments this year, according to data through April from the Federal Railroad Administration. In 2022, Wisconsin had 11 derailments, and 15 in 2021.

In April, a train derailed in Crawford County, which sent cars floating down the Mississippi River.
