Canal Fulton library to show old 16 mm movies Saturday

CANAL FULTON – The Canal Fulton Public Library shows old 16 mm movies on the last Saturday of the month.

This free, family-friendly program provides movies for all ages. This Saturday's program theme will be music. The movies start at 2 p.m. The Canal Street Ramblers will play music from the 1920s to the 1960s starting at 1 p.m.

“We received about 50 movies in 2015. They used to be loaned out to schools for history, literature or nature education," Library Director David Brown said. "We called this program 'Last Scene/Seen Saturdays' because this will likely be your last opportunity to see them, and we’re scheduling them on the last Saturday of the month. Some of the films date from the 1960s and '70s, so they may not be available on YouTube.”

Music is the theme of the five short movies to be shown Saturday. The movies are:

  • "Red, White, and Blue Grass" explores the culture, people, and music of America’s bluegrass country. 25 minutes

  • "The Pledge and the Anthem: Behind the Words" shows how our own national anthem was written and the reason for its words. 17 minutes

  • "Patriotic Music: Its influence on United States History, 1775 -1900" tells the story behind the seven most popular patriotic anthems and how they affected the history of the United States. 21 minutes

  • "Sourwood Mountain Dulcimers" examines the arts of dulcimer building and playing as part of the Appalachian heritage. 28 minutes

  • "The Violinmaker" pictures, without narration, an aged craftsman at work fashioning a violin from what appears to be firewood. 12 minutes
