Canal Fulton Police Department to make video about its school resource officers

Canal Fulton City Council

Tuesday meeting

KEY ACTION: Heard that the Police Department will be making a video about its school resource officers.

DISCUSSION: Chief Sara Wilson said representatives from the Ohio School Safety Center did an assessment of the department’s officers in Northwest Schools. The center was so impressed by the relationships that had developed with students that the Police Department was asked to make a video as a training tool for other school resource officers.

According to its website, the Ohio School Safety Center “is responsible for assisting local schools and first responders with preventing, preparing for, and responding to threats and acts of violence, including self-harm, through a holistic, solutions-based approach to improving school safety.” The center was created by Gov. Mike DeWine in 2019.

OTHER ACTION:

  • Amended an ordinance to include a 3% tax on those who rent only one room for temporary lodging. Previously, the ordinance included those temporary lodgings, including motels, hotels, and Airbnbs, where multiple rooms were rented. The tax is not an increase over last year.

  • Held the first reading of the city’s 2024 budget with a general fund of nearly $1.2 million.

  • Approved a purchase order for $9,368 to Tyler Technologies for the annual maintenance fee of police software.

  • Heard that a grand opening of the disc golf course at Community Park will be held at noon Saturday.

UP NEXT: Meets at 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Safety Center. Work sessions and meetings are recorded and may be viewed on the city’s Facebook page.
