Canal Winchester/Carroll news: Beggar's Night activities announced

The City of Canal Winchester announced it will feature family-friendly Beggar’s Night activities. Children will be able to trick-or-treat on Halloween evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Immediately following trick-or-treat, VFW Post 10523 will host a Halloween party in the Community Center, located at 45 E. Waterloo Street. The free, family-friendly party will feature a costume contest, magic show, and goodie bags for all. Canal Winchester Human Services will help sponsor entertainment for the evening.

While trick-or-treating can provide a lot of fun, general precautions should be taken, according to city officials.

Some basic safety tips to follow include:

  • Have an adult accompany children while they trick-or-treat.

  • Only let children visit houses of people they know who have turned on an outside light to welcome trick-or-treaters.

  • Inspect all candy before eating, and throw out any open or suspicious-looking candy.

  • Tell children to walk instead of run and look both ways before crossing the street.

  • Encourage children to wear reflective costumes or add light sticks to their costumes to help make them more visible to motorists.

  • Be extra cautious of children crossing the street if driving during or shortly before or after trick-or-treat hours.

Trick-or-treat will be held rain or shine.

Leaf pick up

The City of Canal Winchester conducts its annual leaf removal service from the first week in October through the first week in December. This service is free for all Canal Winchester residents located inside the corporation limit only. Residents cannot schedule leaf removal (it is the city of Canal Winchester’s responsibility).

Two city crews are sent out to remove leaves on two routes that have been established. These routes will be fully completed before doubling back over the route. To allow for proper drainage, leaves should be raked to the edge of your grass just above the curb, not down in the gutter pan.

Only leaves raked to the curb will be removed. Sticks, tree trimmings, bushes and other yard waste will not be removed (as part of the leaf removal service) as it may damage city equipment.

Regular yard waste will be picked up separately by Rumpke staff during scheduled trash collection times. Call Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171 to obtain their yard waste disposal guidelines and restrictions.
